[It's something she noticed quite acutely. Him watching her, eying her appreciatively but not in a leering fashion like he did in the beginning days of their partnership.]

Devil or not, I worry about you.

[He couldn't hide the smile that brought to his face, something bright and pleased as he slid a finger down along her cheek to her chin.]

I like being in your thoughts. But there's no need to worry. I'm more than fine.

Except when you get hit and dragged off to who knows where in the middle of the desert, you mean.

[She lifted his hand way from her chin and held it in both of hers, thumbs caressing him.]

Mm, yes, well, every moment can't be perfect. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to appreciate the ones that were.

[She held his hand and he smiled, feeling that warmth and almost protectiveness of her hold.]

Don't fuss over things we can't change, love. I may well have not ended up here but for that. If there's any time I'd feel displaced and as if I don't fit in enough to be nabbed by that bloody portal, it'd be waking up confused and made whole again.

You're in a particularly wise and self-reflective mood tonight.

[Her hand stopped their caresses over him at the talk of his displacement, though she didn't stop holding his.]

So are you unhappy...? That you got them back? The wings, I mean.

I'm... confused. Removing them was no small thing in the first place. Living without them but having them 'just in case' for five years wasn't... well. I suppose it was like giving up something fun, but having a number just in case you really wanted it. When I burned them, when I made that decision, that commitment I couldn't come back from, that was a choice. My choice. And somehow, someone has taken that away from me. It's not like I hate them, Detective. They are lovely and they are mine. But I'd resigned myself to the rest of my existence without them.

[He sighed, shaking his head a little as he smiled down at her.]

They tie me closer to Him and His will, which is what I wanted so very much to get away from. And here I am; whole and yet not, since that weight is lifted.

[She listens to him quietly, taking it all in and trying to understand. She can't possibly know what he's going through, what it felt like to be given something back he never asked for, but she tries. And finds herself twining their fingers together as she pulls his hand closer.]

It doesn't have to be. Taking away your choice, I mean. Some things are out of our control, but even if your Dad or someone else did give them back to you, you get to decide what you want to do with them. You could cut them off again. Or you could use them however you see fit. Or not use them at all.

After all, you're making a choice now, right? If that whole miracle thing is real.

[He found his other hand moving to rest on her waist, just there as they stood on the rooftop, strange stars and satellites blinking down on them, lit by the glare off a planet instead of a moon.]

There's never been anything more real to me than you.

That's not quite what I meant, but I appreciate the sentiment.

[His hand on her waist had her moving a bit closer, just enough to lean into his touch.]

Besides, from what you told me before, you had your doubts. I just don't want you to keep having them, or wondering if I'm being forced into something. Because I'm not.

Here... Here, I think it's easier for me to accept. As I said, a weight's been lifted off me, even with the wings. That... tie to the divine, to Him... it's not there. Not like it should be, anyway. If some version of my Father exists here, I'm not His. Not here. Which means any fussing around by Him wouldn't reach to you. I... think. It's a little complicated, really, but I hope that-

[He sighed again, wondering how he could have so many feelings bubbling up inside of him and not have the right words there to explain it.]

I think it would kill me if I let you do anything- if anything happened between us that wasn't completely of your own volition. I don't want to claim anything I'm not entirely sure of, but... if anything were to happen at all, anything, it needs to be on your terms.

[She placed a hand over his chest, as if to stop him from going on.]

That's what I'm trying to get at. Our whole thing... maybe He did intend for us to meet. I don't know. I can't pretend to know. But just like with you getting your wings back, there are some things we can't control. But everything else? That was me. I chose to keep working with you. And I chose to kiss you on that beach, and those few nights ago here. That was all on my terms. Going home wouldn't change that.

Besides, if He really did want to push us together for whatever reason, why would He make me immune to you? It's all me, Lucifer. It always has been. You don't have to protect me from it.

I... suppose I just have a hard time wrapping my head around it. You were so... anti-me. Very much resistant to everything I offered. And then suddenly not. I suppose I just assumed there had to be some sort of mystical reason for it. You're--

[Another pause, a soft realization.]

I guess I felt you were- are too good for me. You're too good, Detective. Too much of a good thing. There had to be some reason why you'd change your mind.

But - [Said as he lifted a hand to stop her from interrupting, if she was going to.] - I trust you also know yourself and your own mind well enough to know what you want. How you feel. I may want to stop trying so hard to convince you otherwise. Especially as I'm rather fond of the idea of you liking me.

[She listened to everything he had to say, waiting for him to finish before she spoke.]

I was resistant because at first it seemed like all you cared about was getting into my pants. I didn't like all the over-the-top bravado or you forcing yourself on my cases, but you showed me that you were more than just some guy with an entitlement complex. You helped me solve Delilah's case when everyone else just wanted to put it to bed. Same with the Palmetto case. No one's ever been on my side before like that.

For all your flaws and mistakes, I got to know you better, and I liked what I saw. I still do.

I have flaws?

[He tried so hard to make it seem like he believed that confusion, puppy look melting into a smile as he shook his head.]

You needed someone on your side. That it was only me for so long is rather a bit of an annoyance. I don't understand how anyone in your department can work with you and not find you as competent, reliable, steadfast, and true as you are. You wonder why I was so disdainful of your office when we first met. Your treatment in your own department is exactly why. They can't see a good thing when they have it.

Bloody incompetent morons.

[He may or may not notice, but during his little tirade against her department on her behalf, a smile touches her lips. And only grows bigger the more he speaks.

So at the tail-end of that, she finds herself leaning further into his space. Similar to how she did on that beach, just before she kissed him.]

And here you are wondering why I like you so much.

[Oh, he most certainly noticed the lean in, that little flutter twisting away in his stomach as anticipation built. He felt himself catching his breath, letting it out slowly as he smiled, his hand going back to her waist as he smiled down at her.]

Because I'm not idiotic enough not to notice an incredible and lovely woman when she's right in front of me?

[Something like a giggle escaped her against her will, her smile lingering on her face as her arms moved to wrap around him, hands resting against his back.]

Get down here.

[And there she went, leaning further into him even as she tugged him towards her, lips trying to capture his.]

[He didn't need to be asked -- or told, twice. Both his arms circled around her, hands sliding along her lower back as he bent his neck to let his head reach more towards her level, lips finding hers with an unerring accuracy. All the little quips he might want to toss out when involved with someone in this manner just... drifted away, leaving him there with his arms around her and his mouth pressing eagerly against hers.]

[The kiss wasn't particularly overwhelming or sexual, though gone was the chaste nature of their one from a few days ago. It was easy to fall into his touch; his arms, his hands, his lips, all wrapped around her as she pressed against him, her own arms clinging to him as her hands roamed over his back in exploration.]

[There was a quiet sound, muffled against her lips as he let out a soft groan. He did love being touched by her, and with his scars newly healed, it seemed his body was more sensitive in some places than others. Even through his suit, he felt the press of her hands and responded by pulling her in more closely against him.

Chaste was out the window, as more prurient thoughts started to filter through, all fed by the taste of her and the feel of that warm solidness pressed against him.]

[It was an unconscious gesture, borne out of a need and desire to touch him. To ground herself as he pressed more tightly against her. Her head tilted back and to the side when he made that muffled little noise, changing the angle of their kiss as her back slowly pressed into the wall of the roof.

And even then, she felt her hands tightening around him, fingers clasping around his suit right between his shoulder blades to drag him in further. She made a soft sound of her own, his name slipping through on a quiet exhale. Lucifer.]

[He shuddered when he heard what sounded a lot like his name leaving her with that muffled tone of need and desire, pulling his mouth from hers with a gasp, but not stepping any further away from her. Not when she was warm and soft and clinging to him in ways that had him reacting rather... viscerally.]

Chloe... I should... ah. Stop. Now. Here. On the roof, what with, ah, flying... things. And... outside-- bloody hell, you're gorgeous.

[Even as he spoke of stopping, his hands slid up her back, one staying near the small of it to keep her body right where it was, pressing tightly to his as his reacted to her.]

Oh. Okay. Okay.

[Panted against him as she leaned back a bit, just enough so that they each had the space to breathe. She swiped her tongue over reddened and swollen lips, body tingling from where they were pressed so intimately together. And it didn't help that she could feel how he reacted to her.]

You alright?

Very.

[Said with something close to a growl before he lowered his forehead to rest on hers.]

Just... very tempted not to stop. Very, very tempted.

Isn't temptation kind of your thing?

[She let him, doing the same back to him until they were just standing there together quietly under the stars.

Her hand drifted up along his back, just touching for the sake of touching.]
