[In fact, she looked quite relaxed as she laid out against and underneath him. She felt the way his fingers traced her back and let out a soft sigh, obviously content.]

Good. I was... well, worried. Earlier. With the... argument. Normally, you don't stay around when you've gotten to a certain point. There's a 'Lucifer!', a roll of the eyes, and then you're gone. I'm glad you didn't do that. I like this much more.

It's a little different when we're... well, more than work partners and you make an inappropriate comment. Getting up and leaving in the dead of night because you said something I disagree with isn't exactly going to solve the issue. That just comes with the territory.

Well, you did just come over in the dead of the night. Leaving because I've said something off doesn't seem so out of the question. But I'm glad you didn't. I...

[A pause, a quiet breath, his hand stilling on her back as he thought about how to phrase it.]

I can be wrong, Chloe. I know that. Not often, hopefully, but I'm not my Dad -- and even He can be wrong, contrary to the bloody book. I don't want to be so stuck up my own ass I can't admit that. Or see when it bothers you. You mean too much to me. I-- This does. This 'we' we have. I don't want to lose it over something ridiculous like thoughtless words.

[She's quiet throughout that explanation, pausing when he finishes as she tries to piece together her own words.]

I don't either. You, our thing-- it's important to me too. It has been for awhile. And I know that sometimes I could stand to be a little more patient. Sometimes I forget that you're not human or have the same thought process many of us might. Obviously I know who and what you are now, but it's hard to view you that way when you've just been... well, you this whole time. The weird, no-filtered guy who forced his way into my cases. Not some celestial being whose seen almost all there is to offer.

It does tend to change the perspective a bit. I can't blame you, love. Finding out that things you don't believe in and never have are suddenly real? It's why most minds break. It's what kept me from wanting to tell you for so long.

Aside from the other reason, you mean.

[Which was him being scared of her reaction. Of her rejecting him. She's smart enough to piece that together, and while she didn't like the idea of him hiding from her, she understands.]

My point is that even though I know everything now, it's still... a lot to get used to. Just when I think I'm used to something, something else comes through to knock that sense of security down.

[He said it because he didn't know what else to say. He knew he should say something, knew that he didn't want her to think that her thoughts and fears didn't mean anything to him. And he was sorry. Sorry that it had taken them this long to piece things together. Sorry that he'd caused her pain in any way. Sorry that... well. Sometimes he was just sorry.]

I wish... I wish there were easier ways to do things. I always seem to pick the harder route, even when I'm not trying to.

[She's heard him apologize before; it isn't new between them. And yet she can't help but curl up against him more, arm reaching over to grasp along his back and tug them in closer together.]

Well... it's not like you've been in a great place to know how to navigate those routes all this time. I just wish-- I want to be your partner. Not just in work or romantically. I want you to be able to lean on me, Lucifer. And on each other. I'd like to hope you know that I'm not planning on going anywhere by now.

I... really want to believe that.

[He wanted to believe in something. That there was someone out there on his side, someone who wanted him as he was. Maze had been so disappointed when he'd stopped being 'The Devil'. His Father had kicked him out for not being the perfect son. There were few whose opinions mattered to him, but she'd become one of them, and the idea of her finding fault with him for just being as he was sat badly with him.]

I do trust you, love.

Good. That's all I'm asking.

[She knew that millennia of abandonment and anger couldn't just be swept away. But she'd like to believe that she's proven herself to be a trustworthy person to him by now.]

Because I trust you. More than anyone.

That's what I find myself most surprised by, I think.

[His hand slid out from her shirt, coming up to cup her cheek as he leaned in and pressed what, for him, was a rather chaste kiss against her lips.]

I haven't had that in longer than I'd like to think of.

[She leaned into that kiss, pressing her lips back against his with the gentlest brush.]

Well, maybe you should start getting used to it.

I don't think I'll ever get used to you, Chloe.

[His voice was soft when he spoke, eyes gentle and dark as he let his thumb trace over her cheek.]

Get some sleep. I don't want you exhausted in the morning.

Mm. I'll do my best.

[Now that she was safe and nestled in against him, she felt the stirrings of sleep tugging her down, beckoning her to close her eyes. She does, settling in more against him and the warmth of his wing curled over her and letting herself be comforted by the sound of his breathing and heartbeat.]

[He'd keep holding her through the night, watching her drift off and waiting until he was certain she was getting a good, unbothered sleep before he'd let himself join her. His wings would stay out all night, wrapping her up in white glory in hopes that it would keep her mind her own and afford her a mostly dreamless sleep -- or untainted night of dreams, but Lucifer had already decided that if there was something out there mucking with her mind, he'd have to go poke his nose into it to see if he could convince it to stop. Couldn't have her being manipulated, after all. Not even by himself.]
